The conviction of 17 Chinese nationals who were detained in an alleged cyber scam den in Iloilo City in November of last year was warmly received by the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC).
Judge Victorino Maniba of the Iloilo City Regional Trial Court found that the Chinese nationals had coerced their workers into having lustful phone conversations and lewd body part exhibitions, in violation of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act, the Revised Penal Code, and the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
The prisoners received sentences ranging from four to eight months in jail as well as orders to pay P75,000 apiece. The prisoners submitted an application for a plea deal in July.
Alexander K. Ramos, Executive Director of the CICC, stated that the conviction of the 17 Chinese nationals will send a clear message to those who operate cyberscams that their time is running out.
“This will show that we are determined to go after and punish cyberscammers,” he said. “We shall continue to go after these cyberscammers, and we will find them because we have the capability.”
Ramos also expressed gratitude to all the government organizations that helped bring the 17 Chinese nationals to justice.
“The success of this operation in Iloilo City is proof that the whole-government approach will yield a successful result in ending cybercrime,” he emphasized.
On November 4, 2023, a search warrant granted by Iloilo City Regional Trial Court Branch 39 was used to conduct a raid on the cyberscam den situated in Barangay Lawa-an in Jaro District, following over a month of surveillance.
24 PCs, 49 mobile phones, two routers, two TP-link switch hubs with 24 ports, one projector, one monitor, one modem, one bundle, and four boxes of SIM cards were all taken.
