India reached a significant milestone on Monday when 50 lakh medical gadgets were sterilized using electron beam (E-beam) radiation technology created by a top institute of the Department of Atomic Energy. According to a representative of the department’s Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RR-CAT), Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, observed this accomplishment at the electron beam facility next to Choithram Mandi in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. According to him, this accomplishment has placed India among the few nations that extensively employ cutting-edge domestic radiation technology.
The source stated that RR-CAT Director Unmesh D. Malshe gave Mohanty a keepsake to help him remember this event forever. The official claims that since the facility’s operation began in October 2022, 50 lakh medical equipment from various industries have been sterilized there.
When compared to traditional sterilizing technology, the AIC I-Hub, RRCAT’s incubation center, makes it easier to offer electron beam irradiation services to Indian industry at competitive pricing. According to him, RRCAT’s 10 MeV, 6 kW electron linear accelerator provides precisely controlled radiation doses for a range of applications, from a few Grays (Gy), which is a unit for measuring absorbed radiation, to several Mega Grays (MGy).
“Its versatility has enabled it to be used for commercial sterilization of medical devices, mutation breeding for improved crop varieties, colour modification of gemstones, creation of novel materials, modification of semiconductor properties, testing of ISRO components, and various other R&D applications for industries and academia,” he informed. Electron beam irradiation is gaining global recognition due to its eco-friendly, efficient, and secure nature, the official added.
According to the official, this domestically produced E-beam technology might establish India as a world leader in radiation-based applications, including sterilizing medical devices.
