India is emerging as the preferred smartphone manufacturing center, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his opening speech at the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) 2020. The Prime Minister also emphasised that India, which has the lowest smartphone tariff in the world, is also the fastest-growing app market. He also said that every village will have high-speed fibre optic internet access in three years.
The Prime Minister also said that smartphone technology will be used for mass inoculation against the COVID-19 virus. “It is also with the help of mobile technology that we will embark on one of the largest vaccine drives in the world, COVID-19,” he said though he did not provide any further information.
Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani was also one of the keynote speakers at IMC, emphasising the need for a 5G revolution in India, adding that by the second half of 2021, Jio will be helping to lead the way in the country.
“India is today one of the strongest digitally linked nations in the world. In order to sustain this lead, policy measures are required to promote the early roll-out of 5G and make it accessible and usable anywhere. I assure you that Jio will be the leader of the 5G Revolution in India in the second half of 2021,” Ambani said in his speech.
He also stressed the need for affordable smartphones for the underprivileged. “In India, as many as 300 million smartphone users are now stuck in the 2G era. Urgent policy initiatives are required to ensure that these vulnerable people have an affordable smartphone,” he said.
With regard to 5G networking, Ambani said that Jio’s 5G network would be operated by “indigenous network, hardware and technology components,” and said that it will be a tribute to the Prime Minister’s vision for Atma Nirbhar Bharat.
“Jio Platforms, with its family of more than 20 start-up partners, has developed world-class capabilities in Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Big Data, Deep Learning, Internet of Things, Blockchain, etc. We are developing convincing home-grown ideas for education, health care, agriculture, transport, financial services and new trade. Any of these ideas, once demonstrated in India, will be offered to the rest of the world to solve global challenges,” he said.
He also spoke about the need to produce digital hardware in the region, adding that one cannot be dependent on large-scale imports. “Some of the leading multinational firms are moving to India to set up production facilities. India has established world-class chip design capabilities. I specifically expect that India will become a global hub for the state-of-the-art semiconductor industry,” he said.
