The Netherlands and the U.N. launched a project on Thursday to help prepare Europe’s national agencies to supervise artificial intelligence (AI).
The project, undertaken with the support of the European Commission, comes ahead of the passage of the AI Act, the broad legislation that is expected to govern AI use in Europe.
In the project, the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) will be assembling information about how European countries are currently supervising AI and putting together a list of “best practices” recommendations.
The Dutch digital infrastructure agency (RDI) will aid UNESCO in interacting with and networking with national working groups from around Europe, beginning with a conference in The Hague on Thursday.
“What we learn here, I promise you, is going to inform many discussions that are happening at the very same time everywhere around the world,” Gabriela Ramos of UNESCO stated.
UNESCO has been a significant voice in AI issues, with the ethical standards it proposed in 2021 being ratified by all 193 member states, despite the fact that they are not legally enforceable.
The AI Act will be passed this year, according to Nathalie Berger, director of the European Commission service that aids governments in adopting changes, but it will take another two years to become fully operational.
“Supervision is absolutely key to making sure that everything works well in practice,” she stated.
