All customer data was stolen as a result of a hack on Okta’s customer support system, the company announced in a message to customers on Tuesday
According to a letter sent by Okta to clients on Tuesday, hackers gained access to the cybersecurity company’s customer support system and stole data from every customer support user. This was a far bigger breach than the company had previously thought.
According to Okta, the customers are more vulnerable to increased attacks or phishing attempts as a result of the expanded scope. Customers in government or Department of Defense environments were unaffected by the hack, a company representative stated.
“To support our investigation, we are collaborating with a digital forensics company, and once the report is finished, we will share it with our customers. Furthermore, we will also notify those who have had their information downloaded,” a representative stated.
Nevertheless, Okta offers identity management solutions, enabling thousands of small and large companies to offer a single point of sign-on for their employees. Additionally, it makes Okta a highly sought-after target for hackers, who can take advantage of security holes or misconfigurations to access a variety of other targets.
For instance, in the well-publicized assaults on MGM and Caesars, threat actors targeted the Okta platforms of those companies by taking advantage of IT help desks through social engineering techniques. Over $100 million in losses occurred as a result of those two incidents, both direct and indirect, with Caesars having to pay a large ransom.
Customers of Okta received the letter first, as per a report.
When Okta first revealed earlier this month that its customer support system had been compromised, it stated that about 130 customers had been affected. The news caused the company’s market capitalization to drop by almost $2 billion and sent its share price plummeting by over 11%.
On Wednesday, following the bell, Okta is scheduled to release its fiscal third-quarter earnings.
