China pushed for improved data security as it discovered foreign geographic information software was potentially compromising proprietary and sensitive data in important sectors, including its military, and advised security organizations to conduct thorough investigations to prevent further breaches.
According to the Ministry of State Security, a thorough investigation revealed that outside geographic information system software was being used to collect data, some of which involved state secrets, “posing a serious threat to China’s data security and national security.”
The threat was announced in an article on the government’s WeChat public account on Monday, but no detail on the institutions accused of obtaining data or specific Chinese enterprises harmed or targeted was provided.
According to China, the perpetrators are utilizing software to acquire user data without restriction, installing pre-built “backdoors” in software to allow for cyberattacks and data theft.
According to the government, stealing high-precision geographic information data might expose three-dimensional geomorphological mapping of specific locations in its transportation, energy, military, and other critical domains to dangers.
China has increased its efforts to defend its national and data security and prevent information breaches that could harm companies and the economy.
According to the government, agencies must conduct investigations into geographic information data security issues “and promptly rectify and eliminate” any vulnerabilities.
It further stated that data security agencies must develop and improve a joint plan for data security protection in order to safeguard critical national data.
Geographic information, according to the government, can be used as a strategic data resource and in production for fields such as agriculture, energy, driverless cars, and rapid online shopping and food deliveries as technology advances.
