In an attempt to prevent Taiwanese high-tech products from being used for military purposes, Taiwan’s economics ministry said on Tuesday that it has added more products to the list of goods that Russia and its ally Belarus are prohibited from purchasing.
In an effort to stop Taiwanese high-tech products from being used for military objectives, Taiwan’s economics ministry announced on Tuesday that it has added more products to the list of sanctioned items for Russia and its partner Belarus.
Even though there isn’t much direct trade between the island and Russia, Taiwan has already joined the Western-led sanctions movement and denounced Russia’s attack.
Taiwan’s Economy Ministry announced the imposition of new restrictions, stating that the action was taken “to fulfill international cooperation and prevent the export of our high-tech goods for military purposes.”
In addition to some chemicals and medications, which are already on the list, the list also includes machinery used in the production of semiconductors, of which Taiwan is a global leader.
The ministry released a statement saying that the latest penalties are in line with those that have previously been declared by the US, the EU, and other nations.
It further stated that a “common high priority list” of electronic and mechanical components and equipment that are extensively used in commercial applications and have the potential to be used to construct weapons has been developed by the EU, the US, and other countries after they recently gathered weaponry remnants from Ukrainian battlefields.
Applications for export licenses will “in principle” not be accepted, according to the ministry.
Due to the widespread perception that the situation in Ukraine is similar to what may occur if China were to use force to annex the island it claims as its own, Taiwanese citizens have shown great sympathy with the Ukrainian cause.
