Hackers associated with Ukraine’s main spy agency have breached the computer systems of a Moscow-based internet provider. The hackers targeted the internet provider in a retaliatory move against a Russian cyber attack on Ukrainian telecom giant Kyivstar, according to a source with direct knowledge of the operation. Deleting an astounding 20 terabytes of data, the hacking group, known as “Blackjack” and previously linked to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), targeted M9 Telecom, a small Russian internet and TV provider. This resulted in leaving some Moscow residents without internet access.
The source stated that the attack’s motive was to serve as a warning and precursor to a larger cyber assault that the hackers claimed would deliver “serious revenge for Kyivstar.” Specific details about the timing of the hack have not been divulged.
M9 Telecom’s website remained functional despite claims by the hackers that it had been obliterated. M9 Telecom’s CEO declined to respond to comments or provide any additional information.
This incident follows the recent disruption faced by Kyivstar, the largest mobile network operator in Ukraine, when it was targeted by Russian hackers. Before carrying out the attack, the Russian spies had infiltrated Kyivstar’s systems for several months, resulting in severe damage to the company, Ukraine’s cyber spy chief revealed.
In a separate development, a substantial collection of classified Russian military data had been obtained by Ukraine’s military intelligence agency from a sanctioned Russian company called the Special Technology Centre (STC), which is known for producing the Orlan drone and various intelligence equipment for Moscow, the agency announced.
