Amazon’s AWS plans to allocate $15 billion to expand cloud computing in Japan

Amazon Web Services will invest 2.26 trillion yen ($15.24 billion) in Japan by 2027 to improve cloud computing infrastructure.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced on Friday that it will invest 2.26 trillion yen ($15.24 billion) in Japan by 2027 to enhance cloud computing infrastructure, which serves as the foundation for artificial intelligence (AI) services.

Amazon.com is investing in facilities in Tokyo and Osaka to accommodate rising customer demand, according to a statement.

This is in addition to the 1.51 trillion yen spent between 2011 and 2022 to expand Japan’s cloud capacity, according to Amazon’s AWS. The startup stated it provides generative AI services to Japanese corporate customers such as Asahi Group, Marubeni, and Nomura Holdings.

The investment comes as Japan’s government and corporate sector strive to catch up with AI development. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met with the heads of OpenAI, the originator of ChatGPT, and Nvidia, an advanced chipmaker, last year to discuss AI policy and infrastructure.
