This is an exclusive interview conducted by Santosh Vaswani, Content Writer & Editor at CIO News with Tamer Shafik Mohamed, Group CIO at Elsewedy Industries Holding on his professional journey.

When asked him about his career path as a successful CIO, Tamer Shafik Mohamed, Group CIO at Elsewedy Industries Holding, in an exclusive interview with CIO News said, thank you for describing me as successful, I believe there are more challenges and learning opportunities to be seized for improvement as education and experience are an on-going journey.

To answer your question; my plans for my future career take multiple phases.

I resolved to gain several experiences to increase my cumulative experience. I worked on hardware maintenance and everything related to the hardware, then I moved on to learning networks and how to build servers environments.

After that, I moved to learn some programming languages, then I moved to work on ready-made ERP (Microsoft, Oracle), and here I chose to work on a good number of projects for different types, whether governmental sectors, factories, or commercial companies. I went through the experience of working outside the borders of Egypt to learn different experiences related to cultures in the same field.

Then I moved to connect my knowledge in the field of restaurants and retail. And now I ended up as head of information and communications technology in one of the most important Egyptian edifices for industry and trading (Elsewedy Industries).

When asked about the challenges he faced in his career path and how did he overcome them, he said, at every stage and every step of any person’s movement, several challenges must be planned to deal with and overcome.

The most important challenge that I faced was getting out of my comfort zone, as the more I learned technology and a modern style and reached the point of mastery, I hurried to learn new technology, so I started the journey from the beginning and try to overcome the comfort feature that accompanies anyone. That argument led to the formation of endless experiences in all aspects of my life on the professional and human levels.

Speaking about his company and his key business priorities as a Group CIO, he said, El Sewedy Group for Industries is distinguished by its diversity, where it combines the industrial and commercial sides. It has four main sectors, under each of which several industries, most of which are heavy industries, and it is characterized by the integration of these industries to provide complete solutions to match B2B and B2C.

The commercial arm is also distinguished by providing integrated solutions with more than 80 years of experience.

The main group sectors are:

  • Building materials sector
  • Industries sector
  • Commercial & Trading sector
  • Real estate and urban development sector

My key business priority as a Group CIO is changing mind-set to implement all industrial revolutions.

When asked about the digital technologies he plans to implement in his company, he said I hope to implement IOT after the current phase of digital transformation.

When asked about the challenges faced by a CIO today in a similar industry while implementing digital technologies and how can CIOs overcome those challenges, he said, cost and mind-set are the most challenges and can be overcome by a plan.

When asked about best practices/industry trends and his advice to fellow CIOs for their successful professional journey, he said:

  1. Good planning is the key to success.
  2. Implementation in stages gives the ability to observe and discover errors to correct them.
  3. Provide full support to business function for growth.
