President Joe Biden’s 2024 campaign is now on TikTok, despite having stated national security concerns about the platform and banned it from official devices.

According to officials, neither Biden nor anyone else in his administration is expected to join the platform. The campaign team will handle the account solely in an effort to engage voters in a more fractured American populace, particularly as younger voters move away from established platforms. The inaugural tweet had the president being grilled about the Super Bowl as well as an allusion to the newest political conspiracy theory involving music sensation Taylor Swift.

The FBI and the Federal Communications Commission have both warned that ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, may share user data with China’s totalitarian government, including browser history, location, and biometric identifiers. In 2022, Biden banned the use of TikTok by the federal government’s almost 4 million employees on agency-owned devices, with limited exceptions for law enforcement, national security, and security research. The United States’ secretive and powerful Committee on Foreign Investment has been studying the app for years.

Campaign officials stated that they were taking sophisticated security procedures and implementing security processes to ensure safety, but they did not go into detail about the measures or whether they were intended to secure campaign data or voter information.

China passed a law in 2017 requiring corporations to provide the government with any personal information vital to the country’s national security. There is no evidence that TikTok has handed over such information, but suspicions exist because of the massive amount of user data it, like other social media businesses, collects.

Biden’s campaign has a presence on Meta’s Threads, Instagram, Facebook, X (previously Twitter), and Truth Social, the site supported by Republican front-runner Donald Trump.

The president’s campaign has prioritized social media engagements, as well as smaller events starring the president, in order to reach target voters who they feel do not watch traditional media. The campaign and the White House have also increased outreach to social media personalities who they believe can help spread the president’s message.
