Google on Tuesday announced changes to search results and new tools for app developers to promote their products on third-party applications and competitor app stores as part of attempts to comply with landmark EU tech legislation aimed at limiting Big Tech’s clout.
Google, Amazon (AMZN.O), Apple (AAPL.O), Microsoft (MSFT.O), Meta Platforms (META.O), and TikTok owner ByteDance will be required to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) on March 7.
According to Google, changes to search results will increase traffic for huge intermediaries and aggregators while decreasing traffic for hotels, airlines, shops, and restaurants.
Users will be asked to grant Google permission to share their data across Google products and services.
App developers will be able to utilize alternate charging systems other than Google Play billing, and a new initiative will allow them to promote their items directly to European customers outside of the app.
Google will also introduce data portability software in Europe this week, making it easier for developers to migrate customer data to a third-party app or service.
