Chief technology officer Aaron LaBerge of ESPN and Disney Entertainment would join Penn Entertainment, a provider of gaming and sports media, after leaving the firm.
LaBerge, who worked for Walt Disney Co. for more than 20 years, will take on a comparable position at Penn, with effect from July 1.
“This was a personal decision, motivated by my family’s needs,” he wrote in the letter that was sent with the message.
Penn and ESPN, a division of Walt Disney Company, had decided in August of last year to work together to open a sportsbook under the name ESPN BET.
In a different Penn report, LaBerge was reported as saying, “I plan to use my experience from Disney and ESPN to help make ESPN BET an essential piece of the sports fan experience.”
The memo stated that Chris Lawson, EVP of Disney Entertainment and ESPN’s content platforms and operations, will take over as the company’s temporary IT leader while it searches for LaBerge’s permanent replacement.
