The British AI Safety Institute intends to open an office in the United States in order to foster greater international collaboration regarding the regulation of a quickly evolving technology.

The AI Safety Institute of Britain is planning to establish an office in the US with the goal of promoting increased international cooperation on the regulation of a rapidly developing technology.

Officials from the government announced that the institute will build a new office in San Francisco this summer, hiring a team of technical staff to support the organization’s efforts in London and fortify relationships with its counterpart in the United States.

More international cooperation is required to regulate AI, as some experts have warned that the technology might be as dangerous to humans as nuclear weapons or climate change.

Days before the second global AI safety summit, which the governments of South Korea and the United Kingdom are co-hosting in Seoul this week, the institute made its declaration shortly after Microsoft-backed (MSFT.O) When OpenAI first made ChatGPT available to the public in November 2022, hundreds of worried onlookers—among them Tesla entrepreneur Elon Musk—signed an open letter demanding a six-month holdoff on the technology’s advancement and cautioning that it posed unpredictability risks.

A year later, in Britain’s Bletchley Park, academics convened for the first AI safety summit. There, high-ranking business executives and world leaders, including U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, joined forces to debate the best ways to regulate AI.

Tech executives conversed with some of their most scathing opponents, and China indicated its willingness to cooperate despite growing tensions with the West by co-signing the “Bletchley Declaration” with the US and other countries.

“Opening our doors overseas and building on our alliance with the US is central to my plan to set new, international standards on AI safety, which we will discuss at the Seoul summit this week,” stated Michele Donelan, Britain’s minister of technology.
