User experience, a perfect balance between integrity and flexibility

User experience has become paramount in today’s technological landscape.

The pandemic that plagued all of us between 2019 and 2021 and the resulting lockdown across the globe taught us two new things. First, that work anytime, anywhere is realistic, and that the end-user community needs a lot of focus and continuity, as well as disaster recovery, which cannot be limited to data centers.

Another change happened. Functions like human resources started becoming more demanding customers of the information technology group with respect to workplace management and user experience.

The user experience has become paramount in today’s technological landscape. Efforts to minimize attrition have shifted focus towards enhancing the interface between users and technology, ranging from hardware and computing environments to application architecture. A human-centered design philosophy is now central, extending to advanced connectivity, digital meetings, and collaborative systems. This holistic approach ensures that every technological interaction is intuitive, engaging, and efficient.

But with all the good things about user experience, there are possible downsides that technology operations and information security portfolios may encounter.

Equating the challenges of an excellent user experience from a day-to-day life situation. Most of the big cities in India have an excellent network of public transport. The buses form the backbone of the public transport system. They are cheap, can accommodate more passengers, and, above all, offer a more affordable and cost-effective ride. But the buses, at any crowded corner or junction, not only wait for passengers, but in pursuit of picking them up from where they are standing, they make them move 10-15 meters. The passengers rarely gather, all at one place: a bus stop. The passengers, when equated to users, prefer the convenience of getting picked up from where they are standing, and the buses, equated to services offered, tend to offer the pick-up from every point, a small distance apart. In this entire experience, the inconvenience caused by traffic is entirely overlooked. It not only makes the environment filled with stress but also causes potential direct and indirect financial losses, environmental strains, and utter frustration to the public that is in a hurry to get to their office, homes, professional engagements, and even medical emergencies.

The largest deterrents to user experience are security practices. With increasing attack surfaces, an increase in cybersecurity threat portfolios, and the sheer strain of allowing the concept of work anytime, anywhere to achieve post-pandemic business efficiency, the security risks the security risks have equally increased. As such, the security framework is designed around deniability mode. But deniability is not security. Information security can be best defined as a perfect balance between “integrity and flexibility,” and so is the user experience. A user experience is also a perfect balance between integrity and flexibility. While integrity ensures that information generated and exchanged is duly protected, at the same time, users have enough flexibility to pursue their quest for innovation, experimentation, and discoveries without having a dependency on technology or a security organization, or, in other words, no dependency on human touch.

For every 10 problems in information security, there are 25+ odd partners who are willing to offer solutions. The cybersecurity market itself is huge. Various technology research companies have pegged the value of the cybersecurity market at USD 24–50 billion. As such, the market calls for multiple partners and is one of the most sought-after business streams for startups, besides data management.

The growing importance of user experience and the challenge of maintaining the same level of security call for subsequent investments and research in a framework that helps maintain a perfect balance between integrity and security. A human-centered design approach and information architecture that make cross-platform integration more agile are the best options to achieve the required balance. Integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning can further enhance the experience where a machine can take quick decisions based on logic, resolve the problems faced by the users, and use a human-based approach to provide a long-term solution. Such an algorithm will not only help maintain security, but at the same time will provide exceptional approvals where a machine can take a decision. Then the machine updates the perimeter firewall or the SaaS-based web proxy to keep a close eye on such users so that any possible human error does not turn into a major breach.
