Microsoft declared that, instead of releasing “Recall,” an AI-powered tool that monitors computer usage, with its new laptops the following week, it will first test it with a limited group of customers.
Amid worries about privacy dangers, Microsoft (MSFT.O) announced on Thursday that it will preview “Recall,” an AI-powered tool that tracks computer activity, with a smaller sample of users later rather than implementing it with its new laptops next week. The Recall feature records everything from phone conversations to web browsing, building a history that is saved on the computer and searchable by the user even months later.
Instead of becoming widely available for Copilot+ PC users on June 18, Microsoft announced in a blog post that Recall will now only be available for a preview on its Windows Insider Program (WIP) in the upcoming weeks. Microsoft stated that the decision is “founded in our commitment to providing a trusted, secure, and robust experience for all customers and to seeking additional feedback prior to making the feature available to all Copilot+ PC users.”
A line of personal computers with artificial intelligence (AI) features called Copilot+ PCs was introduced in May. Through the WIP, millions of “Windows biggest fans” can sample new improvements coming to the operating system. The WIP is a public software testing program. The business announced that, in response to input from the WIP community, it intends to release the Recall preview for all Copilot+ PCs soon. Soon after this feature was announced, privacy concerns were raised by some social media users who expressed fears that it could allow spying. Meanwhile, billionaire technologist Elon Musk opened a new tab and referred to it as a “Black Mirror episode,” drawing parallels with the Netflix series that examines the negative effects of advanced technology.
