"Great Resignation" moves into third year as employees adopt AI and upskill, according to PwC

A global PwC survey of workers indicates that a greater proportion of workers wish to leave jobs in the upcoming year than they did during the 2022 “Great Resignation” period.

According to a PwC poll of workers worldwide, the percentage of employees who want to change jobs within the next year is higher than it was during the 2022 “Great Resignation” period. In a PwC poll of over 56,000 employees, almost 28% of respondents indicated they were “very or extremely likely” to leave their current employers; this is up from 19% in 2022 and 26% in 2023. In the face of increasing workloads and more workplace instability, workers are prioritizing upskilling and embracing emerging technologies like generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), according to PwC’s 2024 “Hopes and Fears” study.

According to Pete Brown, global workforce leader at PwC UK, businesses need to give upskilling and employee experience top priority since employees are placing an “increased premium” on companies that support their professional development. 62% of the workers questioned stated they have witnessed more change at work in the last year than in the previous year, with about 45% of them reporting they have seen growing workloads and an acceleration of workplace change in the last 12 months.

Eighty-two percent of employees who use GenAI on a daily basis stated they anticipate an increase in efficiency over the next 12 months. Nearly half of those surveyed by PwC expected GenAI to create better compensation, reflecting confidence that these developing tools would promote their career progression. Almost two-thirds of respondents also expected these emerging technologies to improve the quality of their work. To reduce pressure and retain talent, businesses need to make investments in personnel and tech platforms, according to Carol Stubbings, global markets, tax, and legal services head at PwC UK.

According to the research, job happiness is insufficient these days,” she remarked.
