Regarding the IndiaAI mission that Vaishnaw unveiled as part of the summit on July 3, the minister stated that the government would invest in building a platform that will make resources such as high-quality datasets, processing capacity, and a common framework available.
With an emphasis on managing risks and putting in place protections against potential hazards, India is developing legislation to regulate artificial intelligence (AI), according to Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw of Electronics and Information Technology.
Speaking on the inaugural day of the Global IndiaAI Summit (2024), Vaishnaw said, “India is working on AI regulation. It will require political consensus.”
“We need to collectively figure out a way to impose limits on AI. In India, we have understood that, for many of the problems we face, AI can be a very big tool to solve problems. Simultaneously, we need to contain the risks,” Vaishnaw added.
Vaishnaw also said that establishing AI regulations will require an international agreement. He mentioned that the next two days will be devoted to discussing this matter at the Global IndiaAI Summit.

“We will be investing in creating a compute infrastructure of 10,000 or more GPUs. We will be creating AI innovation centers, and we will focus on procuring high-quality datasets. We will have an application development initiative and also put huge emphasis on skill development,” he added.
These statements were given by Vaishnaw during the Global IndiaAI Summit’s opening ceremony, which was also attended by Srinivas Narayanan, VP of OpenAI, Japan’s Minister Hiroshi Yoshida, and Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Electronics and IT.
According to Narayanan, AI has made India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem more dynamic. “OpenAI is committed to supporting IndiaAI’s application development initiative,” he said. Applications include industries like healthcare, education, and agriculture, according to OpenAI’s Narayanan.
According to MoS Prasada, GPAI would give like-minded nations a platform for the advancement and application of AI.
S. Krishnan, secretary of MeitY, said, “We need to ensure that AI actually does benefit the world at large, the community at large, and at the same time we work together to prevent whatever user harm it can create.”
“India has played an important role in the GPAI and has been a very important contributor to this discussion at various levels,” Krishnan added.
