Musk enraged when EU accuses X of misleading users by using blue checkmark

European Union digital regulators discovered that Elon Musk’s social media company X had broken EU online content laws and that its blue checkmark misled consumers.

EU digital regulators found on Friday that Elon Musk’s social media business X violated EU online content regulations and that its blue checkmark deceives users. This judgment might result in a hefty fine and major changes to the firm’s operations. The European Commission has brought charges, the first brought under the Digital Services Act (DSA), after a seven-month inquiry. Large internet platforms and search engines are required by the new regulations to take stronger action against unlawful information and threats to public safety.

The preliminary conclusions or allegations that the EU executive delivered to X focused on the company’s advertising transparency, data access for academics, and so-called dark patterns that influence user behavior. Owner Musk threatened legal action, but X declared that it disagreed with the EU’s evaluation of its compliance with the DSA. “We look forward to a very public battle in court so that the people of Europe can know the truth,” Musk stated on X.

Earlier, he claimed that, in contrast to other anonymous platforms, X had turned down the Commission’s unlawful offer of a covert agreement to restrict expression. EU Industry Commissioner Thierry Breton retaliated. He scribbled, “Be our guest,” on X. “A ‘Secret Deal’ has never existed and never will exist. with anybody. The DSA gives X (as well as any major platform) the ability to make promises to resolve cases.”

“It’s up to you whether or not to make promises. That is the operation of rule-of-law procedures. Breton said, “See you (in court or not).” According to the Commission, X’s verified accounts that have a blue checkmark do not adhere to industry standards and have a detrimental impact on users’ freedom to choose freely and intelligently who accounts to connect with. Musk changed the use of the blue checkmark, which originally signified that an account belonged to a public figure whose identity was verified, to imply it belonged to a paying subscriber after purchasing the platform that was then known as Twitter in 2022.

According to the commission, X had also disregarded a DSA mandate that stipulated that information concerning advertisements in a library should be easily accessible and searchable. X was also accused of preventing researchers from using its publicly available data. If found guilty of violating the DSA, the corporation might be fined up to 6% of its global revenue. It will take several months to reply to the charges. “X now has the right of defense—but if our view is confirmed, we will impose fines and require significant changes,” Breton stated in a statement. The Commission stated that it is still conducting independent investigations into the distribution of illicit content on X and the steps it has taken to combat misinformation.
