Spanish authorities arrest 3 Russian hackers for DDoS cyberattacks

The cyberattacks were allegedly directed towards vital infrastructure, public and commercial government websites, and vital services in nations that support Ukraine in its struggle with Russia.

According to Spanish authorities on Saturday, three pro-Russian hackers have been arrested for allegedly using cyberattacks against Spain and other NATO nations for terrorist reasons.

According to the Civil Guard, the suspects were taken into custody because they were allegedly involved in distributed denial of service (DDoS) cyberattacks targeting important sectors and public institutions.

It did not specify whether charges or detentions had been brought against the three unidentified suspects.

According to the report, the cyberattacks were allegedly directed towards vital infrastructure, public and commercial government websites, and vital services in nations that support Ukraine in its struggle with Russia.

On the social media site X, police posted a video of a raid at a suspect’s house, during which a wall-mounted Soviet-style sickle and hammer flag were visible.

“These computer attacks have been organized by the hacktivist group NoName057(16), which started after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and has been one of the most active,” the Civil Guard said in a statement.

“In their own founding manifesto, this group acknowledges that they ‘will respond proportionately in response to the hostile and openly anti-Russian actions of Western Russophobes’.”

According to authorities, the arrests happened in Huelva and Seville, in southern Spain, as well as at Manacor on the Balearic Island of Mallorca.
