In a quick response to the announcement, the former president Donald Trump stated that Iranian hackers had targeted his election campaign.

The possibility of foreign intervention in the US presidential election has surfaced again with new allegations of Iranian hacking targeting US political campaigns. Microsoft released a report on Friday that showed a hacking group connected to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard had accessed the account of a former senior adviser to a presidential election campaign. After this breach, there was another spearphishing attempt in the same campaign that was aimed at a senior official.

In a quick response to the announcement, former President Donald Trump stated that Iranian hackers had targeted his campaign. The episode was exploited by Trump, who has frequently cited his tough policies toward Iran as evidence of his power, to attack the Biden administration and call it “weak and ineffective.” The incident raises questions regarding the security of the 2024 election, which Microsoft attributed to the group Mint Sandstorm. Even while Trump played down the hack, claiming that only “publicly available information” was obtained, it’s still unclear how much damage was actually done.

Parallel to this, another source revealed on Saturday that it had acquired internal Trump election campaign materials. This sparked rumors as to whether the documents were the product of a different leak or had anything to do with the Iranian breach. A comparable goldmine of information was also provided to some media sources, which further muddied the story of the incident. These events’ timing has stoked concerns once again about foreign interference in US elections, especially from Iran, which has a long history of hostility toward Trump. Tehran has elevated Trump to a top priority as a result of his administration’s abandonment of the 2015 nuclear agreement and the 2020 death of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

The cyber attempts highlight the continued weaknesses in the US political system as investigations proceed, and as the 2024 election draws nearer, there may be more foreign meddling.
