OpenAI has banned ChatGPT accounts associated with an Iranian crew that may have been spreading misleading material about the upcoming US presidential campaign on social media.

ChatGPT accounts connected to an Iranian crew that may have been disseminating false information about the impending US presidential campaign on social media have been banned by OpenAI. According to what we’ve been told, the accounts used ChatGPT to produce brief social media remarks and lengthy pieces to post on social media about Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump for the presidency of the United States. Despite being posted on many websites, however, the influence operation “does not appear to have achieved meaningful audience engagement,” according to a Friday alert.

Earlier this week, Google’s threat hunters released intelligence on Iranian cyber influence activity in response to an increase in attacks that resulted in data leaks from the Trump reelection campaign. In total, the AI organization says it identified 12 accounts on X and one on Instagram involved in this covert influence operation. In addition to the US presidential election, the fake news and comments covered the conflict in Gaza and Israel’s participation in the Olympics, among other politically charged topics. OpenAI attributed the phony posts to Storm-2035, a Tehran-backed group that Microsoft also raised concerns about last week.

Using five websites that mimicked both conservative and progressive news sources, the initial workstream produced articles on US politics and world events, according to a statement released by OpenAI on Friday. “The second workstream created short comments in English and Spanish, which were posted on social media.”

With the US midterm elections in 2022, Storm-2035 and at least one of its fake-news sites, EvenPolitics, have been active on the internet, releasing roughly ten “articles” a week; while they are written in English, the group also maintains additional Arabic, English, French, and Spanish influence-operation websites.

Storm-2035 only received a 2 on the Brookings Breakout Scale, which assesses the efficacy of these kinds of covert operations from 1 (lowest) to 6 (highest), indicating that while it was active on several platforms, it did not exhibit any genuine signs of being discovered or extensively disseminated by actual people.

“The majority of social media posts that we identified received few or no likes, shares, or comments,” observed OpenAI. “We similarly did not find indications of the web articles being shared across social media.” Five accounts that OpenAI claimed were being used by government-backed organizations in China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea to create dangerous software scripts and phishing emails were shut down earlier this year.
