The creator of ChatGPT, OpenAI, is endorsing a bill in California that would mandate internet companies to label anything generated by artificial intelligence (AI). This content can range from harmless memes to deepfakes used to spread false information about political candidates.
The California state artificial intelligence (AI) law SB 1047, which requires AI developers to evaluate some of their own models for safety, has drawn more attention than AB 3211 thus far.
The IT industry, led by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, has criticized that legislation.
In this legislative season, California state lawmakers attempted to introduce 65 bills pertaining to artificial intelligence (AI), according to the state’s legislative database. These bills included provisions to guarantee that all algorithmic decisions are impartially proven and to safeguard deceased people’s intellectual property from being used by AI companies. There are already a lot of dead bills.
According to a letter to California State Assembly member Buffy Wicks, San Francisco-based OpenAI thinks that transparency and traceability standards, including watermarking, are crucial for AI-generated material, particularly during an election year.
Experts are concerned about the role artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content will play in one third of the world’s population that will be holding polls this year. AI-generated content has already been significant in several elections, such as the one in Indonesia.
“New technology and standards can help people understand the origin of content they find online and avoid confusion between human-generated and photorealistic AI-generated content,” OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon wrote in the letter, which was reviewed by Reuters.
The state assembly has previously approved AB 3211 with a vote of 62-0. It is now scheduled for a vote by the full state Senate after passing the Senate appropriations committee earlier this month. It will go to Governor Gavin Newsom for signature or rejection by September 30 if it passes before the end of the legislative session on August 31.
