According to the Indian embassy in Laos, at least 47 Indians who were detained in “cyber scam centers” have been released from the Bokeo province, the Southeast Asian country reported on Saturday. As of right now, the Indian mission has helped 635 Indians escape Laos and made sure they returned home safely.
Indian officials have cautioned their countrymen against accepting “fake job offers” in Laos and have highlighted the importance of thorough verification in order to prevent becoming victims of fraud.
In a recent successful operation, the Indian Embassy in Laos said that it had freed 47 Indian nationals who had become victims of cyberscams operating within the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the province of Bokeo.
The embassy posted images of the rescued Indians on X and stated, “Of these, 29 were turned over to the Embassy by Laos officials after their operation on illegal activities in Golden Triangle SEZ, while the other 18 went to the Embassy in distress, seeking help.”
The scammers would pose as ladies on dating apps in order to communicate with possible victims. They would eventually appeal to the target to make an investment in bitcoin trading. One of the rescued Indians was cited as stating, “Many were duped in India in this way.” The article further stated that if the “cyber slaves” didn’t reach their daily goals, they would be denied food and rest. HT is unable to independently confirm this data.
The Indian Embassy encouraged the Laotian government to take action against the dishonest parties involved in a statement released on Saturday.
Indian nationals considering job offers in Laos are strongly advised by the Embassy to proceed with caution and do comprehensive investigation in order to prevent becoming victims of scams.
The alert, which can be seen on the Embassy’s website, provides thorough instructions and encourages people to contact the Embassy with any questions.
Embassy officials traveled from capital Vientiane to Bokeo to liaise.
According to the official statement, representatives of the Indian embassy traveled to Bokeo from the capital, Vientiane, in order to arrange with local authorities for the rescue mission. When the rescued group arrived, Prashant Agrawal, the Indian Ambassador to Laos, met them to talk about the difficulties they faced and to offer advice on what to do next.
The embassy has finished all the formalities required by the Laotian government in order to return them to India. 30 of the people who were rescued have already returned to India or are on their way there, according to the statement, and the other 17 are waiting on final travel arrangements before leaving.
Agrawal emphasized that “ensuring the safety and well-being” of Indian nationals is a primary priority for the Embassy, according to a statement from the embassy. During his visit to Laos last month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar brought up the problem of trafficking in Indian nationals with Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.
The Indian embassy in Laos assisted the rescue of 13 Indians who became victims of cyber scams in the nation that same month and allowed their return to India.
