The Gilgit-Baltistan Awami Action Committee organized a protest march on Monday against the government’s alleged misuse of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and cybercrime laws, claiming these measures are being used to restrict free speech and muzzle public criticism of local issues.

Advocate Ehsan Ali, the chairman of the GB Awami Action Committee, Baltistan division president Najaf Ali, and senior leaders Baba Jan and Mumtaz Nagri led the protest.
The rally attendees marched along River View Road before gathering at Gilgit’s Central Press Club, where the committee leaders gave speeches.

Addressing the event, the committee leaders said that the local administration was abusing the Anti-Terrorism Act and laws against cybercrime.

They added that in an attempt to silence their voices advocating for the rights of the people, fake complaints had been filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act and cybercrime laws against political activists and employees of the GB Awami Action Committee.

They declared that they would not put up with forceful actions against political workers and that they would keep enjoying their right to free expression. The head of the Awami Action Committee and other names have been added to the Fourth Schedule by the GB government.

The local individual basic rights, the continuous supply of power, and their right to own local land are what the Awami Action Committee, Baltistan division, head Najaf Ali stated they have been demanding.

He claimed that the Federal Investigation Agency has begun filing fake cases against locals rather than resolving issues of public concern. The speakers claimed that “land grabbing and issuance of licenses for mining operations to non-locals continue in the area” and that local body elections had not taken place in the region for the previous 20 years.

The attendees strongly supported a motion calling for the removal of cybercrime alerts sent to political staff members. The resolution further asked that the fake cases filed against the employees of the GB Awami Action Committee be dismissed by the government.
