Federal Court in Abuja orders to detain Journalist Isaac Bristol for cybercrime

Investigative journalist Isaac Bristol, popularly known as PIDOM, is being held in the Kuje Correctional Center per an order from a federal court in Abuja. Mr. Bristol, who is known online as @pidomnigeria and 99%oppressed on X (previously Twitter), is accused of nine crimes, including publishing false information against President Bola Tinubu and cybercrime.

In his court appearance with Judge Emeka Nwite, Mr. Bristol entered a not guilty plea to the charges. He will be held in detention until September 23rd, when his bail application is scheduled to be decided.

Police claimed that between June and July, Mr. Bristol distributed a secret government document via Twitter, according to court records. The letter purportedly made false representations that President Tinubu gave the chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) about N24 billion as “free money” through Vice President Kashim Shettima (later exaggerated to N90 billion in subsequent posts).

Concerned by Mr. Bristol’s unexpected arrest, his internet fans swiftly started a campaign requesting his freedom by utilizing hashtags like #FreePidom, #PIDOM, and #WhereisPidom.

Charges against Mr. Bristol specifically include claims that he attempted to destroy proof by trying to get rid of his cell phone, spread false accusations of money laundering against President Tinubu, and organized support for the #EndBadGovernance protest in order to put pressure on the government.
