European Union to set up AI Factories to boost the development of the AI technology

To accelerate the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the European Union (EU) has issued a call for the establishment of AI factories.

The European Commission announced on Tuesday that AI factories will be built around the network of European High-Performance Computing (EuroHPC) supercomputers and made available to a variety of European customers, including startups, industry, and researchers.

According to news sources, EC President Ursula von der Leyen stated that AI factories will help ensure that the EU remains at the forefront of this game-changing technology.

With access to data, computing power, and storage services provided by the EuroHPC supercomputers, AI factories will assist AI developers in training their massive generative AI models.

According to the Commission, the AI factories will be integrated with the AI efforts of EU member states, resulting in a thriving AI ecosystem.

According to the statement, they will accelerate the development and validation of AI industrial and scientific applications in critical industries like clean and agritech, healthcare, energy, automotive and transportation, defense and aerospace, robotics, and manufacturing.

The first deadline is set for November 4, 2024, and there will be follow-up deadlines every three months for as long as funds are available. The call will remain open until December 31, 2025.

According to the Commission, the request will be backed by an EU commitment of about 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) from Horizon Europe and the Digital Europe Programme, as well as an equal amount of financing from the member states.
