In order to create artificial intelligence (AI) models that can aid in the early diagnosis and treatment of diseases, particularly in women, Mumbai University will be working with local hospitals. The university wants to raise the percentage of screenings and significantly lower the illness load as part of this AI in healthcare effort.
Together with input from subject matter specialists at these facilities, it will assist in supplying Al-based solutions to the healthcare industry. Even though it currently collaborates with medical facilities like Nanavati and the Tata Memorial Hospital, this network will grow in the future to provide better results.
The university’s center will benefit from the relationship with hospitals by having access to patient case studies, which they may utilize to create Al models. “The focus will be on diseases and conditions common in women. For instance, in many cases, stress levels are the primary cause of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The Al model can help us understand different factors influencing the condition in women, be it the stress factor, the lifestyle, or the diet. We intend to collect the data, analyze it, see if there’s a pattern with the help of domain experts from these hospitals, and then develop the model that can help in early detection and preventive measures,” said MU’s R Srivaramangai, who is heading the project.
Although the university provided some cash for the initiative via the PM-USHA scheme, the center is looking into other funding sources from the government and business community. According to Faruk Kazi, head of MU’s research and development unit, plans are on to use the Al model for early diagnosis of a number of malignancies, including breast, cervical, and even tuberculosis.
In order to make sure that the state’s health infrastructure is prepared to handle it, such as the timely and equitable delivery of medicines, he stated that their center intends to eventually examine the region-by-region pattern of emerging diseases.
The center now has access to worldwide data through open source, and Kazi stated that they hope to partner with more hospitals in the future to improve local and regional data. They also mentioned that IIT-Bombay is working toward similar goals and that they intend to work with them. For the endeavor, the university also recently inked Memorandums of Understanding with Purdue University and Saint Louis University.
