Samir Kumar, a 25-year Amazon veteran, was named to head the e-commerce behemoth’s consumer division in India on Wednesday, the company announced. The appointment is in force as of October 1.
According to a business statement, Manish Tiwary, the outgoing national manager for Amazon India, has chosen to investigate a career opportunity outside the company.
In addition to his existing position as the leader of Amazon’s consumer businesses in the Middle East, South Africa, and Turkey, Samir Kumar will have the duty of overseeing India in the capacity of country manager.
Kumar, a systems engineer who began working at Amazon in 1999, was a member of the group that designed and introduced Amazon India in 2013. He obtained a master’s degree from Utah State University in 1995 after graduating from NIT Rourkela in 1993 with a degree in electrical engineering.
Kumar will now get reports from the division’s present leadership, which includes Saurabh Srivastava in charge of categories, Harsh Goyal in charge of everyday essentials, Amit Nanda in charge of the marketplace, and Aastha Jain in charge of growth initiatives. Amit Agarwal, senior vice president for Emerging Markets, will only get reports from Kishore Thota, who oversees the Emerging Markets Shopping Experience. Agarwal served as India’s country manager from 2013 until 2022.
“India remains an important priority for Amazon, and I am super excited about the opportunity ahead as we continue to transform lives and livelihoods. We have a strong local leadership bench, and, along with Samir’s experiences across emerging markets, I am even more optimistic about our future plans to deliver for customers and the business in India,” Agarwal said in the statement.
The Christmas season sales, which usually account for 15% of the total yearly sales for the nation’s e-commerce giants, preceded the change in leadership. Even as competition with longtime rival Flipkart heats up, the proportion of the e-commerce sector continues to be split by the entry of rapid commerce players. On September 27, Amazon India and Flipkart, a Walmart company, will begin their yearly festival season sales.
