Cybercriminals target victims using India Post for online scam
Cybercriminals are currently using India Post as a target to trick gullible people into online scam. Although there are still not many occurrences being reported, experts worry that this might change dramatically.

Telangana received 89,783 complaints about cybercrime in 2023; homemakers and retirees were most affected by courier frauds.

Because of a recent scam involving a retired government official, this topic has received more attention. A 75-year-old retired central government official from West Marredpally lost Rs 23.26 lakh in a noteworthy case. The victim was called by someone impersonating as an India Post representative, which is how the fraud started. The caller said that illegal goods, such as ID cards and police uniforms, were found in a shipment that the victim had sent from Mumbai to Dubai.

The victim was then urged to report the crime to the authorities and given contact information for a man posing as Vishal Thakur, a police officer, who claimed to be the victim.

About this, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) is actively conducting a thorough inquiry. Thakur requested a commission of almost Rs 400 crore from the alleged scam and said that the victim’s Aadhar details were being utilized for money laundering.

The victim gave in to pressure and moved Rs 23.26 lakh into an account to have his identity confirmed by the Reserve Bank of India. The sufferer had no cause for concern at this point. He didn’t start to mistrust things until he was asked for an extra five lakhs.

Even a retired person was duped by their operation because it was carried out so precisely. After informing the authorities, an investigation was started. Results showed that West Bengal was connected to the accounts that the con artists used to carry out their scheme. The police, however, speculate that these accounts are probably mule accounts.

The rise in FedEx courier scams has been a prominent tactic used by con artists, with victims typically suffering losses between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 2 crores. According to statistics provided by law enforcement, courier fraud accounts for almost 30% of all cybercrimes, with homemakers and retirees being the majority of victims.
