Cybercrime police investigate 44 lakhs worth of total fraud in Siliguri
In Siliguri, cases of cybercrime are increasing as new fraud schemes to trick people surface. Within a week, two Siliguri homeowners lost ₹44 lakhs to cyber criminals in two different situations.

A woman from Hakim Para in Siliguri Municipal Corporation’s Ward No. 17 reportedly filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime Police Station on September 21. The woman had received a call from someone posing as the Mumbai police station, Andheri.

The caller said that one of her accomplices had already been detained and that her Aadhaar card and cell phone SIM card were being used illegally. The caller threatened to put her in jail if she didn’t pay. The woman then transferred ₹13 lakhs. But she discovered she had been duped when she told her son about the incident later.

In another instance, a resident of the Pradhan Nagar neighborhood of Narmada Bagan was conned out of ₹31 lakh through a stock market trading scam. A woman sent the victim a WhatsApp message with a link to a stock market trading website. The victim began trading after visiting the link, and at first they made money. Still, the prospect of profit lured him in, and he put in ₹31 lakhs. He discovered his account had been closed when he attempted to access it later.

Investigations into these cases are presently being conducted by the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police.
