Cybercriminals targeting senior Americans prosecuted in Santiago

Twenty-one people, including two business entities, have been formally prosecuted by the Santiago Prosecutor’s Office for their roles in a cybercrime network that cheated elderly Americans out of millions of dollars. The accusations are the outcome of Operation Discovery 2.0, a comprehensive investigation that uncovered fraudulent schemes intended to defraud hundreds of American seniors’ retirement and insurance funds.

Over 450 pieces of evidence, including documents, expert testimony, and significant findings, are included in the 950-page indictment. The National Police, U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Special Division for the inquiry of transnational crimes, and the New York Police all provided support for the inquiry. The defendants are charged with money laundering, identity theft, cyber fraud, and intimidation.

The criminal organization used advanced techniques to prey on elderly victims by operating covert phone centers in Santiago. While some cybercriminals are being extradited to the United States, others are still being held under preventative custody. The confiscation of assets, including cash, property, and automobiles, has been demanded by the prosecution. The case serves as a stark reminder of the significant effects on the Dominican Republic’s economy and global standing, particularly with regard to tourism.
