A new cyber and fraud division will be established by Police Scotland in reaction to the rising incidents of cybercrime in the nation.

According to the police, cyber-related concerns are expected to become more complicated by 2030. To address this, a coordinated strategy will be provided by the new expert group in collaboration with other UK agencies and partners.

Cybercrime is thought to have made up at least 5% of all reported offences in the previous year.

The tech-driven changes are “fundamental” to its 2030 vision, which is focused on “safer communities, less crime, supported victims, and a thriving workforce,” the organization said. Training will be provided to the unit’s workforce for being better equipped to deal with online crime and become “one of the most digitally enabled police services,” the force said.

In keeping with its three-year strategy, which outlines 130 benchmarks to be met by 2027, Police Scotland has also committed to increasing the application of artificial intelligence.

Initiatives include making a “proof-of-concept generative AI solution” that employees may use to boost productivity in addition to continuing to invest in and develop new AI-powered products.

In a bid to take a more proactive approach to preventing crime, the force has also pledged to become “an even more data-driven organization.” Officers will benefit from it by being able to enter data more efficiently and employ automation to transport data to all systems automatically.

In a media briefing, chief constable Jo Farrell said: “What we have is a lot of data; we’re awash with data, and we need to use the latest technology to convert that so that we’re fighting crime effectively and able to operate as efficiently as we can.”

Additionally, the force announced that it will establish a new multidisciplinary product team focused on digital and data innovation to assist staff in finding ways to improve productivity and “power real innovation.”

Technology will also be used by the organization to deliver more “person-centred” contact services and to “retain and attract staff” by minimizing administrative responsibilities and enabling workers to perform their jobs effectively and safely.

Furthermore, according to Farrell, the police are willing to implement the divisive live facial recognition program since it is a necessary tool for law enforcement to protect public safety.

She continued: “Not using those biometrics that exist to identify violent perpetrators or those who commit crime against the most vulnerable, I think it would be an abdication if we don’t explore, explain, and keep pushing along that route so we get ourselves in a position where we can look back and say I’m confident they’re using the technology appropriately and without bias, for the greatest good of keeping people safe.”

In order to address the effects of outdated technology, the force will also implement a Digital Division program that includes updating its Office 365 and criminal history system technologies.

The list of other missions included investing in the Policing in a Digital World program, which was started to assist the force in responding to cybercrime such as online child sexual abuse, exploitation, and fraud, as well as carrying out the Digital Evidence Sharing Capability (DESC) rollout to reduce delays in the legal system.
