Authorities are alerting people to a new kind of fraud in which con artists threaten to suspend subscribers’ identification modules (SIMs) for noncompliance.
The public has been warned not to respond to calls from people threatening to cancel their SIM card registration by the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Centre (CICC). This is because the SIM card has allegedly been used to send out messages about illegal activities like human trafficking, online casinos, and illegal recruitment for work abroad.
According to Alexander Ramos, executive director of CICC, the callers would identify themselves as Department of Information and Communications Technology staff members.
“We are once again appealing to the public to ignore calls from suspicious or anonymous callers,” Ramos said.
In order to stop cybercrime, he also urged the public to report incidences to the Inter-Agency Response Centre Hotline 1326.
“By reporting to authorities, you are also helping other people by preventing them from becoming future victims,” he said.
The purpose of the SIM Registration Act was to reduce the use of cell phones in fraud and other illegal activities. Text scams, however, persisted in their proliferation even after the legislation was passed. The schemes were allegedly orchestrated by a few illicit Philippine offshore gaming operators, according to the DICT.
