Malaysia intends to develop a national AI regulatory framework and cloud policy

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on Tuesday that Malaysia intends to develop a national cloud policy and artificial intelligence (AI) regulatory framework.

At a groundbreaking ceremony for Google’s new $2 billion data centre and cloud region in the nation, he stated that the national cloud policy will be centred around four main goals: increasing public service innovation and efficiency; fostering economic competitiveness and growth; bolstering user trust and data security; and empowering citizens through digital inclusivity.

“We aim to position Malaysia as a hub for generative AI, and investments from tech partners will be critical in building a robust and secure digital infrastructure,” Anwar said.

He said the government is setting up the National Al Office to oversee all AI-related activities in an attempt to make Malaysia a competitive player in the global Al scene.

According to Anwar, the government hopes to accomplish a number of significant goals in the upcoming year, such as finishing up its Al Technology Action Plan (2026–2030) and putting in place a legal framework to encourage the use of morally and environmentally responsible Al technology.

According to the Xinhua news agency, he mentioned that the government will also hasten the implementation of Al in important areas in Malaysia.

“By leveraging partnerships with industry leaders and strengthening collaboration among all stakeholders, Malaysia can realise these goals and establish its role as a leading Al-driven nation in ASEAN,” he added.

Google Cloud and Malaysian technology company Dagang NeXchange announced their partnership on Monday. Through this partnership, Google Cloud will be able to provide next-generation sovereign cloud solutions in Malaysia that are specifically designed to satisfy the digital sovereignty needs of businesses in regulated sectors like public services, healthcare, and energy.
