Police officers will soon be receiving cyber commandos training that has been launched by IIT Madras Pravartak.

The Union Home Ministry launched the six-month residential program, which would concentrate on specialised cyber training. The training is intended for all law enforcement personnel in the country. The commandos will be a proactive force, whereas the current cybercrime units concentrate on reactive tactics like cybercrime investigation and prosecution.

During the following six months, the participants will learn how to proactively detect cyberattacks and employ forensic technology to construct defences, according to program launcher and director of the institute, V. Kamakoti.

The difficulties facing the police in combating the crimes were described by Sandeep Mittal, additional director general of police, Cybercrime Wing, Tamil Nadu. “By 2024, there will be 50 billion internet-connected devices, such as refrigerators, microwaves, washing machines and so on. Crucial infrastructure, especially operational systems, needs to be well protected. Cyber security needs an understanding of international conventions on cybercrimes as the cyber criminals are mostly abroad,” he said.

30% of the course will be theoretical, and 70% of it will be practical, according to Col. Arvind Kumar, director of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). Participants will also have industrial visits. He claimed that this program and the cyber commandos’ training will be overseen by the institute’s faculty.

The Union Home Ministry founded the I4C to give law enforcement organisations a framework and ecosystem to combat cybercrime in a coordinated and all-encompassing way.

Housed under a Section 8 business, IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation is a centre for technological innovation focused on sensors, networking, actuators, and control systems. IIT Madras is the host institution, and the Department of Science and Technology funds it as part of its national mission on interdisciplinary cyber-physical systems.
