Elders are the primary target of rising cybercrimes, Brakpan SAPS alerts

There has been a noticeable decrease in the number of cases of cyber-related criminal activity since the SAPS earlier alerted the public about cybercrimes.

Senior folks were the focus of the majority of the massive number of fraud cases that the Brakpan police received reports of in the previous month.

Romance scams, extortion, hacking, identity theft, phishing, EFT fraud, cyberbullying, and social media profile cloning are common instances of cybercrimes in South Africa.

Using computers, networks, and cellphones for illicit activity has become a significant challenge. People adopt an attitude of “It will never happen to me” and are quite careless about protecting their electronics.

The general population is warned to exercise additional caution whenever they use the internet for socialising, selling, money transfers, or making purchases. You should reject a trade right away if you have any doubts about it.

Cybercrimes are invariably enticing yet unreal. The seller/initiator is constantly eager to get the sale closed.

Additionally, people should be aware that no bank will ever call you and request your personal information or an OTP code.

Tell the caller that you would be visiting your nearest bank office if they claim to be from the fraud department and that there are anomalies on your account. Never take advice over the phone that you are unsure of.

Why would you reply to an email or SMS claiming to be the winner if you are aware that you did not enter a competition? It’s obviously a con. Refrain from succumbing to temptation.

If you are exchanging something for another item, never pay for something you haven’t gotten yet, and meet the seller in a public area.

Develop the habit of asking questions. When it comes to your hard-earned money, which can go in front of your eyes due to ignorance, naivete, or desperation, there is never a silly question.

The public is urged by the SAPS to report any suspected or actual cybercrime via the internet, via phone at 08600 10111, or by visiting the closest police station.
