Hacker demands ransom in cyberattack against ITDA in Uttarakhand

After reportedly breaking into the Information Technology Development Agency (ITDA) server of the state and requesting a ransom, the Uttarakhand Police have filed a complaint against an unidentified individual.

Inspector General of Police (Crime and Law and Order) Nilesh Anand Bharne stated that a formal complaint under Section 308(4) (extortion) of the BNS and 65/66/66C of the IT Act has been filed at the Cyber Crime police station here against the unidentified hacker in relation to the event.

He added that a SIT investigation into the cyberattack has also been authorised, but that there was no data loss because the impacted government websites were promptly restored by the IT professionals.

According to Bharne, the issue was discovered on October 2 while a technical team was addressing complaints about the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS).

ITDA received notice of this after discovering that all of its server’s folders had a notepad message about hacking, in which the accused provided a mail ID for contact and a message about delivering data securely only after paying a ransom, according to the IGP.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Navneet Singh, Special Task Force, a SIT has been formed to look into the matter.

According to him, the police team has successfully removed a malware file, many digital logs, and an evidence retention system from the location.

According to Bharne, a number of central agencies are supporting the probe, including 14C, NIA, CERT-IN, NCIPC, etc.
