The actual harm caused to victims by cybercrime is once again shown by research. People who have been tricked by an attacker are experiencing a variety of negative effects.

According to research done in the UK by Akamai, this is the case. All 1,002 respondents who had experienced cybercrime in the previous year lost an average of 808 British pounds, or 967 euros, as a result of the incident they were a part of.

Shame and Trauma

After suffering financial harm, one in five respondents found it difficult to pay their bills or buy groceries. Beyond the financial issues, two out of three British victims suffered from trauma.

29 percent had difficulty sleeping, and 43 percent kept the true harm from those around them out of embarrassment. Phishing accounted for 57% of the cases, followed by identity theft (33%), phone intrusions (30%), and ransomware (15%). Fifty-five percent of respondents said they were reluctant to use online services because of the numerous risks.

Online Unavoidable

In the past, victims would have been severely impacted by these disruptions. This scenario is made worse by the fact that many services, like banking and government laws, operate exclusively or considerably more quickly online these days.

A vital aspect of contemporary life is being online. Consequently, victims’ willingness to participate in these situations is harmed in addition to their financial and emotional well-being.

But there is no way to stop online threats; the issue is too big for that. We have long known from IT professionals that reducing stigma and educating people about the issue are essential to improving the current state of cybercrime for both individuals and businesses.
