Data revealed by the cybercrime department shows that in the first eight months of 2024, residents of Bengaluru lost an incredible ₹1,242.7 crore to cybercriminals. When compared to the cumulative losses over the previous three years combined, this amount represents a significant increase of ₹214.6 crore, according to media reports.

Bengaluru has registered a startling 12,356 cybercrimes so far this year (through August 31), with an average of 1,544 incidents each month, according to the report. In contrast, 17,633 cybercrimes were reported in the city in 2023, with an average of 1,470 instances per month.

According to the data, the entire amount of money that cybercriminals have stolen this year is more than the sum that they have taken in 2021, 2022, and 2023 put together.

Concerns about cybercriminals targeting people with various scams, such as investment fraud, Aadhaar-enabled payment frauds, and job-related scams, are on the rise.

Few cases solved

Only 552 (4.4%) of the 12,356 incidents that were reported up until August 31 have been solved by police, and only ₹111.8 crore (8.9%) of the stolen money has been recovered.

According to media reports, a senior CID officer explained the poor recovery rate by saying that cybercriminals usually change their strategies, making it more difficult to apprehend them. Many people are victims of large-scale financial scams, particularly new investors.

Those who lost smaller amounts of money frequently have no recourse since investigators increasingly concentrate on cases involving greater quantities. Critics contend that smaller victims are treated unfairly by this strategy.

Furthermore, the problem has gotten worse due to a lack of cybercrime investigators and staff being reassigned to special cases, which has left many cases unresolved.
