A Nagaland student was robbed of Rs 38,000 by a cyberscammer who also took her intimate pictures in order to further blackmail her and demand more money, a police official said on Monday.

Beginning on October 10, the student’s journey began when a man posing as a State Bank of India officer called her.

She lives in the university residence hall and is a student at Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT). She is originally from Dimapur in Nagaland.

She was erroneously informed by the man who contacted that a loan of Rs 1 lakh had been taken out in her name and that she had to repay it, according to the police.

The fraudster changed strategies after she denied taking out a loan, claiming to be a Hyderabad police officer and threatening to sue her until she paid Rs 38,132, according to the police.

They said that the student moved the money to an account out of fear of difficulties.

But this was not the end of her experience.

According to authorities, the scammer forced her to strip and participate in a video chat, taking compromising pictures. The scammer is now using those pictures to demand an extra Rs 1 lakh in blackmail.

Police in Gorakhpur said they have opened a probe after the student reported the incident to them on Sunday night.

“We are taking the matter seriously, and arrests will be made soon,” Circle Officer (Cantonment) Yogendra Singh said on Monday.
