The Cyber Crime Wing’s cyber patrolling team announced on Wednesday that they had discovered and removed a website mimicking the “National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.”
The website’s domain registrant is situated in Hong Kong, and a notice was filed with the appropriate authorities to stop the fake website, which was removed promptly.
Law enforcement authorities use the internet to detect and prevent cybercrime, a practice known as cyber patrolling.
It entails looking for dangerous and illegal information on the internet.
“Cyber patrolling can help prevent cybercrimes in their early stages and ensure a safer cyberspace. To take proactive action to curb the menace of cybercrimes, the Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing has formed a cyber patrolling team to monitor fraudulent activities in cyberspace, including social media and messaging platforms,” an official release stated.
The team discovered that the reported website (https://infaulwnmx.cyou/) has an inbuilt setting to appear fullscreen with a voiceover at the rear saying, “Your computer has been blocked because you have seen some pornographic contents.”.
They defraud the people by presenting a fine of INR 30290 with IPC Sections, forcing them to pay using credit cards, and capturing their information, which is later used to steal the money.
Police encouraged internet users to verify the integrity of URLs, especially when financial transactions are involved.
Another recent fraud is the India Post scam, in which an SMS is issued to the public stating that “we are unable to deliver your parcel and please click on the link below to re-attempt delivery.” The website charges Rs 25 as a re-attempt fee and collects card information in the background, which can subsequently be used to scam money.
