George Njuguna, CIO of Safaricom leaves after five years, and a replacement is appointed

George Njuguna, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Safaricom PLC, left the company after five years.

CEO Peter Ndegwa and George have made the decision to explore interests outside of Safaricom, according to a statement.

Before being named the Acting Chief Technology and Information Officer in March of this year, George began working for Safaricom in 2019 as the Director of Information Technology.

In the statement, Ndegwa claimed that since joining the company, George has played a crucial role in digitizing Safaricom’s operations, implementing the company’s telco to techco strategy, expanding the technology team’s talent fourfold to over 800, and establishing Agile working practices within Safaricom.

“On behalf of Safaricom, I wish to thank him for his contribution to our transformation journey, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours,” the CEO said.

James Maitai has been appointed by Safaricom as the next Group Chief Technology and Information Officer (CTIO), taking over from George Njuguna, with effect from November 1, 2024.

James rejoins Safaricom PLC after serving as CTIO at Safaricom Ethiopia from January 2023.

James has spearheaded the swift implementation of an extensive technology stack and the expansion of the network to 3,000 locations while he has been in Ethiopia.

“He was also instrumental in operationalizing the M-PESA ecosystem, implementing a next-generation digital infrastructure and core network, and driving strategic cost leadership by realizing over 30% savings in technology OPEX,” Ndegwa said.

James worked at Safaricom PLC for 16 years before joining Safaricom Ethiopia. During that time, he held a number of positions, including Director-Network, where he oversaw the company’s technology network and systems during the planning, building, operating, and strategic stages.

Additionally, he worked for ExCo for two years, from 2019 to 2021.
