Game Freak, the company that develops Pokemon, was the target of a historic hack earlier this month that exposed decades’ worth of data online, providing us with an inside look at one of the most profitable brands ever.
The creation narrative of the Pokemon universe, tales of Pokemon’s ‘relations’ with people, and cut notions like South Kalos have all been discussed. However, Centro, one of the most well-known people who leaked this information online, asserted that after October 19, things would eventually settle down. That did not occur.
Only yesterday did it come to light that the hacker had the source code for Pokemon X/Y and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, as well as a scrapped WarioWare-style game and an unnamed multiplayer project. According to Centro, “I think you have bigger problems at hand” in response to the copyright strikes against all uploaded photographs and videos from the leaks, which were directed specifically at Nintendo and The Pokemon Company.
There were two screenshots of Game Freak’s GitLab included with this jab. To put things in perspective, GitLab has all of the developer’s projects, such as source code, research and development data, the battle logic for the series, what looks to be a schedule for upcoming games (“pokemon_production”), and much more. It’s still unclear how much the hacker was able to download prior to August, when they lost access, according to Game Freak.
What We Do Know: The Source Code Leaks
The extent of the hack’s devastation is seen by these screenshots. By gaining access to GameFreak’s internal development, the leaker was able to obtain source code for both unreleased and old games, which is disastrous for any developer.
While the extent of the breach is yet unknown, Centro disclosed that they own the source code for “the Switch games.” We do know that they downloaded the source code for Let’s Go and the latest version, Scarlet and Violet, but it’s unclear if that includes all Pokemon games on the Switch or just the mainline titles.
Additionally, the hacker was able to access previous games like Black and White 2, HeartGold and SoulSilver, X/Y, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, and others. The hacker’s own photographs in this latest Centro post, however, hint that there may be more than we anticipated. They had access to 97 groups, 732 individuals, and 857 projects using Game Freak’s GitLab. Perhaps things aren’t slowing down nearly as much as we initially believed, given the vast volume of data.
