In a cyber safety and security training session on Monday, Goa police encouraged 120 sarpanchs to start a local campaign to raise awareness of cybercrime.

The cybercrime police station and the panchayat directorate arranged a cybercrime awareness workshop with the goal of teaching sarpanchs and local officials about crucial digital safety procedures. Rahul Gupta, SP (cybercrime), stated, “Sarpanchs are important stakeholders in taking the government’s initiative to the grassroots level. Hence this initiative aimed to equip local governance leaders with knowledge and tools needed to protect their communities from online threats.”

The session included topics including preventing data breaches, comprehending online fraud tactics, and spotting cyber risks. Sarpanchs can assist in spreading knowledge and stopping fraud, as demonstrated by the practical instruction on safe online behaviours given by Vidyanand Pawar, PI, from the cybercrime section.

An outline of common cyberthreats like phishing, social media scams, and UPI frauds, strategies for safe online transactions and protecting digital identities, instructions on how to report cybercrime incidents through the 1930 and national cybercrime reporting portal, and recommendations for neighbourhood campaigns to raise awareness about cybercrime prevention among villagers were among the session’s main highlights.

Sarpanchs vowed to follow the safety procedures, according to Gupta “In today’s digital age, it is essential that our village leaders understand the risks of cybercrime and are prepared to help their communities stay safe online,” he said.

Sarpanchs were encouraged by the cybercrime police station to host similar awareness events within their jurisdiction, involving student volunteers and cybercell staff.
