PIB cautions users about phoney "SBI Rewards" apps

Regarding a widely shared message urging people to download an app in order to receive “SBI rewards,” the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a warning. It has been determined that this message is a component of a scam designed to swindle users. PIB emphasised the need for not downloading unknown files or clicking on dubious links, clarifying that the State Bank of India (SBI) does not distribute links or APK files via SMS or WhatsApp for the purpose of redeeming awards.

The warning is in reaction to a growing number of cyberfraud cases in which victims have lost large sums of money as a result of complex frauds. The goal of PIB’s fact-checking campaign is to safeguard consumers against these kinds of phishing efforts and increase knowledge of the dangers of unwanted communications.

How the scammers operate

By telling victims that their reward points are about to expire unless they take urgent action, the scammers try to instill a sense of urgency in them. As an example, a message says: “Your SBI NetBanking Reward Points (Rs 18,000.00) will expire today! Redeem them now through the SBI REWARD App. Install & claim your reward by cash deposit in your account.” The purpose of these messages is to deceive users into downloading dangerous software that has the ability to steal confidential information.

How to redeem my SBI points

Your SBI Points can be redeemed for a variety of goods and services, including cinema tickets, airline tickets, mobile/DTH recharges, jewellery, electronics, clothing, home décor, and kitchen equipment. Visit https://www.rewardz.sbi/ or give SBI Rewardz customer service a call at 1800-209-8500 to redeem.

Preventive measures against fraud

Check for sender authenticity: Make sure the message is coming from a reliable source at all times. To verify any suspicious requests, get in touch with your bank immediately using your verified contact information.

Avoid clicking links: Refrain from downloading files or clicking links in unsolicited messages. These are frequently used by scammers to steal your information or install malware.

Look for warning signs: Keep an eye out for warning indications of fraud, like requests for personal information or frantic language.

Use official applications and websites: For transactions and account management, only use official banking apps and websites.

Turn on two-factor authentication to give your accounts an additional degree of protection.
