The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) and Sinclair have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on standards and technology development for wireless broadcast services across next-generation broadcast and telecommunication networks.
The international ATSC 3.0 wireless broadcast standard will be improved for a range of television, mobile, and other fixed applications that can help India and the rest of the world. Broadcast-to-Everything (B2X) use cases will benefit from ATSC 3.0’s new features, which include dynamic traffic management, quick interoperability with 5G networks, effective spectrum use, low-latency datacasting, edge content distribution, and longer battery life for wearables, smartphones, feature phones, and Internet of Things devices.
Additionally, IIT Bombay will directly support the ongoing B2X release standardization effort as a member of ATSC.
In addition to having about 250 million TV households and more than 1 billion mobile subscribers, India also has a high per capita mobile data consumption rate and a large number of popular linear TV and radio channels, as well as live news and sports networks. B2X will support sustainability, alleviate network congestion, and deliver a high-quality service for concurrent and popular content. By expanding broadcast into the IMT-2030 (6G) ecosystem, B2X enhances Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) even more.
Long-term, B2X will propel advancements in advanced agricultural practices, remote education and skill development, emergency and disaster management, service resilience, satellite positioning and timing augmentation, vehicular communications, and open AI-based broadcasting and datacasting applications.

Shashi Shekhar Vempati, former CEO Prasar Bharati, IIT Bombay alum, and member of the ATSC Business Advisory Council, said, “The recent decision by Brazil to adopt the ATSC 3.0 standard for broadcast services, based on extensive testing of multiple systems, paves the way for B2X to further advance the standard’s broadcast resilience for the greater public good. This collaboration furthers the developmental goals of a Viksit Bharat (developed Bharat) as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
