On November 25, 2024, the cabinet will examine the legislation, which focuses on systems that are essential to civic protection, public safety, military, and health.
The proposal expands the powers of Italy’s top anti-mafia prosecutor to supervise inquiries into extortion cases connected to data breaches. Following a number of arrests linked to unauthorized access to state systems, hundreds more are being investigated, including those who have ties to well-known people like Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio.
Meanwhile, investigators in Bari are looking into a possible hack at Intesa Sanpaolo, the biggest bank in Italy, that might have exposed Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s account. These occurrences highlight how urgent the planned crackdown is as Italy looks to protect its digital infrastructure.
