Online sales are predicted to rise by 8% this year before the holidays. The social media behemoth Meta is developing new facial recognition technologies in response to the surge in traffic in order to safeguard users from hackers.

Both Facebook and Instagram users complain about getting locked out of their accounts and struggle to get back in. Restoring the previous account is made easier by the new setting.

“If you upload a video selfie, our technology will be able to compare it to your profile pictures and other pictures that you have uploaded onto your account to authenticate and make sure that it is you,” said Diana Doukas, a spokesperson for Meta.

Despite the fact that this new technology is intended to offer an additional degree of security, several opponents are concerned that Meta might be keeping their face recognition information. However, privacy is taken very seriously, as Doukas affirmed.

“We immediately delete any facial data generated after the comparison that’s needed for identification of your account,” she says.

More sophisticated than ever, scammers can target people in a variety of ways. These include using websites, impersonating well-known celebrities, pretending to be a romantic partner, and even imitating well-known corporations. “Celeb-bait” is a prevalent fraud that users frequently encounter. It occurs when hackers attempt to lure and convince people into doing or purchasing anything by using images of well-known people. Because it can confirm the user’s identity, this new facial recognition technology is intended to stop this kind of scam.

This new technology was developed by Meta in October and is currently accessible nationwide.
