IIT Delhi and DRDO’s successful demonstration of quantum communication technologies marks a significant advancement in secure communication. Their tests established a new standard for reliable and impenetrable communication, which is crucial for the defense and strategic industries. The study concentrated on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), a state-of-the-art technique for encrypting data that is impossible to crack covertly.
Fiber-optic cables spanning 50 km in the lab and 8 km throughout the IIT Delhi campus were used to demonstrate QKD. Free-space setups were also used in the tests to evaluate QKD over short distances, such as 80 meters in open space and 20 meters in the lab.
USING FREE-SPACE TECHNOLOGY, INDIGENOUS INNOVATIONS
The BBM-92 protocol, a sophisticated method that securely exchanges information via photon pairs, was used in free-space quantum communication studies.
Another noteworthy accomplishment was hybrid entanglement, which showed promise for future communication systems due to its extremely low error rate. DRDO and IIT Delhi have concentrated on creating in-house parts such as high-performance detectors and single-photon sources.
This initiative improves India’s quantum technology capabilities while lowering dependency on imports. This partnership lays the groundwork for secure communication in vital sectors like finance and defense by utilizing advancements in fiber and free-space quantum communication.
ADVANCING INDIA’S QUANTUM FUTURE
These developments build on the first QKD demonstration in India, which took place in 2022 and involved the establishment of quantum communication over a distance of 100 kilometers between Vindhyachal and Prayagraj. With funding from deep-tech efforts for defense innovation, IIT Delhi and DRDO are still looking for innovative ways to improve secure communication.
A significant advancement in secure communication is anticipated when sensitive data can be sent in the future without worrying about being intercepted thanks to quantum technology.
